I thought Danerys putting the slavers on pikes felt very much part of the story. Not that Game of Thrones didn’t have its moments. The only thing I can really say about the violence is that I think it feels more natural in The Witcher. So both shows are rated R, and both have plenty of sex and violence. Immediately I think of shows like Wynonna Earp and Killjoys, but there are countless examples, including, of course, The Witcher.
This meant we could have actual, serious fantasy and even more intense sci-fi shows that are sincere and just great, in a way that felt new or at least improved. If you think it’s uncool, don’t make it! Anyway, Game of Thrones had a huge budget and also some self respect. So often, fantasy made for adults seems to be embarrassed that it’s fantasy made for adults. I think Game of Thrones did something extremely important for fantasy TV, and that’s just that it took it seriously. This is maybe the most important thing to talk about, but I do feel like I’m giving away my take a little. So let’s take a look! Disclosure: I’ve seen The Witcher and the first few seasons of Game of Thrones, and I’ve read a few of the Game of Thrones books, but I’m not a book stan, and it also doesn’t matter because I want to examine the shows themselves, as TV. The Witcher is the first big R-rated high fantasy TV show to come out after Game of Thrones, and love it or hate it, Game of Thrones kind of changed everything, at least where fantasy TV is concerned. To draw comparisons is disingenuous, and it boxes the series up before it’s given the chance to prove itself on its own.We’re not the first to make the comparison. Still, that doesn’t mean that it’s an exact replica of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, or any other blockbuster fantasy property. Like so many fantasy shows that have come before, The Witcher stands on its own merits in part from its source material, but the show will no doubt resort to familiar fantasy tropes along the line. When it comes to taking a role, that's the most important thing.
It's a huge scale project – it's very intimate in terms of the character studies, which is what I love. And I think that's what people will see and really connect with. The Witcher is set in its own world and there are always going to be genre comparisons, but I think The Witcher has its own proper characters and their own struggles. Pierreson will star as Istredd in The Witcher, and when speaking with Digital Spy, the actor says that The Witcher stands apart from Game of Thrones in various ways. Royce Pierreson's voice talents have been used in several video games like Call of Duty, and he most recently played musical director Burt Rhodes in Judy.
